The official prayer breakfast hosted by Members of Congress at the United States Capitol is now known as the United States Prayer Breakfast

Vision and Purpose

Gathered in friendship

The vision is to encourage the gathering together in the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth as adopted by the Senate and House Prayer Breakfast Groups in the United States Congress.

Since 1943, members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have met each week while Congress is in session for prayer, personal discussions about the issues facing them and about the needs of our nation. As did President Abraham Lincoln before them, they recognize that the challenges they face cannot be solved in their own strength.

They are united in believing that by looking to the life of Jesus, people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs can join together, encourage and promote forgiveness and reconciliation.

When the group began, there was an understanding that this would be a meeting of friends to which all Members would be invited. The purpose would be to grow in personal relationship with God and bonds of friendship with each other and to be an encouragement to one another as friends. These friendships often transcend party differences and opposing views on national and international issues.

It is in this spirit that we aim to be a vehicle of fellowship using the life of Jesus as an example.

Friendship first

These friendships often transcend party differences and opposing views on national and international issues.

All are welcome

Every president, regardless of party or religious persuasion, has joined since. Persons of any faith tradition or no faith tradition are welcome.

A public trust

The United States Prayer Breakfast Foundation exists to carry out the vision and purpose of the United States Prayer Breakfast.
